Albemarle County Public Schools’ 2018 Spelling Bee Champion Will Make Her Third Trip to Regional Bee in Three Years

– It took 19 rounds and a word first known to be used in 1571 for Layla Bouber, a Henley Middle school sixth-grader, to win the Albemarle County Public Schools’ 2018 Spelling Bee last evening. This will be the third time in three years that Layla will represent the school division in the Central Virginia Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held on Saturday, March 3, at Albemarle High School.

Attracting and Retaining High-Quality Teachers and Increasing Career and Workforce Readiness for Students Are Among the Community’s Top Budget Priorities

Attracting Quality Teachers

Support for competitive salaries to attract and retain high-quality teachers was the top-ranked item on Albemarle County Public Schools’ 2018-19 Budget Survey. A total of 2,247 students, parents, employees, and community members responded to the online survey, which is considered by Superintendent Dr. Pamela Moran in the formulation of the funding request she submits to the School Board.

Albemarle County School Board Approves Transportation Service That Will Expand Opportunities for High School Students to Attend an Academy Program

At its meeting last evening, the Albemarle County School Board approved a pilot transportation plan that will expand opportunities for high school students in all areas of the county to attend the school division’s STEM academies. While students have always been able to apply to attend any of the division’s three academies, students were required to provide their own transportation if they attended a program that was not located at their base high school..

Pilot Program to Increase School Bus Safety Reduces Illegal Passing of School Buses by Motorists by More Than 50 Percent

School Bus Pilot

A pilot program designed to improve safety conditions for children who enter or exit school buses has reduced the number of dangerous incidents on Albemarle County roads by more than 50 percent. The program involved the installation of extended stop arms that are three times as long as the stop arms currently in use on school buses throughout the Commonwealth.

ACPS Seeking Volunteers to Serve on Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee

The Albemarle County School Board is seeking applicants for seats on the Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee. This committee is responsible for developing capital improvement program recommendations for the Superintendent and School Board. Applications are being accepted to represent the Jack Jouett, Rio, Rivanna, Samuel Miller, and Scottsville magisterial districts and for an At-Large position. The deadline for applications is Friday, December 1.

Dr. Pamela Moran Will Retire June 30, 2018, Dr. Matthew S. Haas Appointed as Successor

The Albemarle County School Board this evening appointed Dr. Matthew S. Haas as the school division’s 20th Superintendent, succeeding Dr. Pamela R. Moran, who announced her retirement today. Dr. Moran will retire on June 30, 2018, and Dr. Haas’ appointment takes effect the next day, July 1.

Albemarle County Public Schools’ Ira Socol Selected by Center for Digital Education as One of the Nation’s Top Tech Trailblazers

16 Programs at Nine Albemarle County Public Schools Receive Shannon Grants

A new restaurant will be making its debut next spring in a rather unusual form—a traveling school bus. The Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC) has received a $5,000 grant from the Shannon Foundation to begin work on the project, which will bring together students from across the school. It is believed to be the first program of its kind in the nation. In addition to CATEC, the Shannon Foundation awarded $8,137 to eight Albemarle County public schools in support of 15 programs.

Albemarle County Public Schools One of Nine School Divisions in Nation to Earn Top Environmental Award From U.S. Department of Education

Albemarle County Public Schools has earned the federal government’s premier environmental impact designation in the field of education. Only nine school divisions across the country received the Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Award, conferred by the U.S. Department of Education earlier this month. There are more than 13,000 school divisions in the United States.
